Cornwall Maerl Bed Survey Finds Seaweed New to Science
Natural Englandâs underwater surveys off the south coast of Cornwall have revealed a cluster of rare seaweeds, including one tiny red species now confirmed as new to science. In waters many people assume are already well studied, researchers also logged species never before recorded in the UK and another not seen in British waters since the 18th century. The result is more than a scientific curiosity. It shows how much ecological value sits inside maerl beds, and how much can still be missed when fragile seabed habitats go unsurveyed or underprotected.
The standout discovery is a minute Ceramium, also known as pincer weed, measuring only a few millimetres across. Natural England said divers had to bring living fragments to the surface so scientists could grow the seaweed in the lab and sequence its DNA, allowing the species to be identified for the first time. Professor Christine Maggs, a leading authority on seaweed taxonomy, said she first encountered the plant in the early 1980s and had been trying to resolve its identity ever since. That long scientific thread matters. It shows that important discoveries do not always come from remote oceans; sometimes they depend on patient fieldwork, specialist lab methods and the simple fact of getting live material to the right people.
The surveys also confirmed Ulva rigida, a green sea lettuce not previously verified in the UK, and recorded Neofolia rosea, or little rosy tongue weed, which had only been found once before in the UK at the same site. Another delicate red seaweed, Bonnemaisonia clavata, had not been recorded in British waters since the 1700s. Natural England senior marine officer Angie Gall said the team has already counted more than 350 species living on the surface of the maerl beds alone. That figure is striking partly because it is incomplete. Many species live between the maerl branches, while others appear only at certain times of year, suggesting the full biodiversity of these beds is likely higher still.
Maerl beds are formed by slow-growing, coral-like red seaweed that creates pink, gravel-like structures across the seabed. These habitats are among the most biodiverse shallow-water areas in the north-east Atlantic, providing shelter and nursery space for marine life and helping support healthy fisheries. They also carry climate weight. Natural England said carbon becomes trapped in the surrounding sediments, giving maerl beds an important role in long-term carbon storage. Cornwall is central to that picture, because the vast majority of Englandâs maerl beds are found there.
This story also shows the value of citizen science when it is backed by formal research. Initial reports came from divers involved in the Seasearch project, and Natural Englandâs follow-up work in 2023 and 2024 went on to identify extensive areas of previously unknown maerl beds off Englandâs south coast. That sequence offers a practical lesson for marine policy. Divers can spot unusual habitats early, taxonomists can do the slow identification work, and public bodies can turn both into evidence that supports habitat protection and better management at sea.
The pressure on these habitats is clear. Natural England highlighted physical disturbance, including scallop dredging, alongside pollution and climate change as ongoing threats to maerl beds. Because maerl grows slowly and is easily damaged, losses can take a very long time to reverse. Seaweed expert Francis Bunker, who found the tiny Ceramium during these surveys, said the discovery was exciting but also a warning. If sensitive seabeds are damaged before scientists have properly described what lives there, biodiversity can disappear from the record before it has even been understood.
That is why the Cornwall findings land as a policy story as much as a natural history one. Better mapping, seasonal monitoring and stronger safeguards for sensitive seabeds are not abstract ideas here; they are the next logical step when surveys keep revealing overlooked species and previously unknown habitat extent. The hopeful message is straightforward. When divers, scientists and conservation agencies look closely, they do not just find rare seaweeds. They build the case for protecting living marine systems that store carbon, support fisheries and still hold discoveries of real scientific value.
