Cornwall seaweed discovery boosts case for maerl protection
Underwater surveys off the south coast of Cornwall have revealed how much life can be hidden in a seabed that many people would never notice. Natural England says its work on maerl beds has uncovered rare seaweeds of national and scientific importance, including species never before recorded in the UK and one tiny red seaweed that is entirely new to science. That matters beyond a specialist species list. It shows that some of Englandâs richest marine habitats are still yielding major discoveries, even in waters that might seem well known.
The most striking find is a minute Ceramium, or pincer weed, only a few millimetres across. Its size meant earlier observers could not identify it with confidence. Divers collected living fragments, scientists grew them in the laboratory, and DNA sequencing finally allowed the seaweed to be described properly. Professor Christine Maggs, a leading authority on seaweed taxonomy, said the breakthrough helped resolve a question she had been carrying since the early 1980s, when she first encountered the species. The result shows the value of patient field science backed by careful laboratory work.
Natural Englandâs survey team also confirmed Ulva rigida, a green sea lettuce never previously recorded in the UK. They found Neofolia rosea, known as little rosy tongue weed, only for the second time in the UK and again at this same site, as well as Bonnemaisonia clavata, a delicate red seaweed not seen in British waters since the eighteenth century. Seen together, these records suggest the Cornish beds are doing more than hosting high numbers of species. They are holding seaweeds that are easy to miss, hard to study and, in some cases, absent from the record for generations.
Maerl beds are formed by slow-growing, coral-like red seaweed that creates living, pink gravel across the seabed. Natural England has already recorded more than 350 species on the surface of these beds alone, and Senior Marine Officer Angie Gall said many more live within the maerl itself or appear at different times of year. The habitat does practical work as well as scientific work. Maerl beds support healthy fisheries by providing nursery grounds and shelter for marine life, and they help store carbon by trapping it in the sediment. With the vast majority of Englandâs maerl beds found in Cornwall, local protection decisions carry national importance.
Another important part of the story is how the surveys began. Citizen scientist divers working through the Seasearch project first flagged the site, and Natural Englandâs follow-up work in 2023 and 2024 went on to reveal extensive areas of maerl bed off Englandâs south coast that were previously unknown. That is a useful reminder that marine recovery does not depend on one institution acting alone. When community divers, public agencies and academic specialists share evidence, even familiar coastlines can produce discoveries that change how protection should be planned.
The warning is clear too. Natural England says maerl beds face ongoing pressure from physical disturbance, including scallop dredging, as well as pollution and climate change. Francis Bunker, the seaweed expert who found the tiny Ceramium during the surveys, said the excitement of a species new to science sits alongside a harder truth: biodiversity can be lost before it has even been fully described. For policymakers, the lesson is straightforward. Protection cannot wait for a complete species record. Keeping damaging activity away from fragile seabeds, improving water quality and treating maerl beds as priority habitats are practical steps that fit what the evidence now shows.
The Cornwall findings land as a hopeful argument for stronger marine protection rather than a story of decline alone. A habitat that stores carbon, supports fisheries and shelters rare seaweeds has now been shown to hold far more than scientists first understood. The next phase is less about surprise and more about follow-through. If these beds are protected well, England will not only keep a remarkable part of its marine life intact; it will also give science the time to discover what else is still living beneath the water.
