Drax Selby BECCS Permit Approved by Environment Agency
The Environment Agency has approved a variation to Drax Power Station’s environmental permit for its proposed carbon capture plant near Selby. The decision document was issued on 5 August 2026 and the grant was announced on 14 August, after a final consultation that closed on 24 June. What has been approved is more than a single piece of capture kit. The variation allows Drax to add post-combustion carbon capture to Units 1 and 2, along with solvent treatment, carbon dioxide compression, changes to flue-gas handling, a new quencher tower, replacement effluent treatment and a hydrogen production step used to condition captured CO2. On local wildlife and air quality, the Agency says Natural England agreed with its conclusion that the carbon capture plant would not have adverse effects on the interest features of nearby European sites.
