England school solar scheme expands to save £220m on bills

According to Department for Education figures, secondary schools that have added solar alongside LED lighting are saving about £58,600 a year, while primary schools are saving about £21,000. That is money staying inside school budgets instead of disappearing into avoidable energy costs. The climate case is just as clear. Public-sector decarbonisation can sound distant when discussed in strategy papers, but school buildings show what it looks like on the ground: lower emissions, lower running costs and visible clean power in the places communities use every day.
A new pilot now aims to push that model beyond direct public funding. Another 150 schools and colleges across Yorkshire and the Humber, the East Midlands and the South East will test an approach in which private firms install, own and maintain the panels at no upfront cost, subject to quality checks. Under the arrangement described by the government, schools would buy the electricity generated on site at a rate significantly lower than their normal tariff. That matters because it shifts solar from a grant-dependent project towards routine infrastructure procurement, while leaving schools out of the maintenance burden.
The Department for Education expects the pilot to help open privately funded solar installations to every school and college from next year. Ministers say lessons from the trial will feed into a national rollout from 2027-28, with the longer-term aim that every school and college in England can access solar. This builds on wider government support for schools managing energy costs and sits within the departmentās estates strategy and 10-year plan. If delivery matches the ambition, the result could be a stronger education estate that buys less expensive power and produces more of it on site.
Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, presented the programme in straightforward terms: money saved on energy can be redirected to pupils. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband made a similar argument, saying clean, home-grown electricity should help schools cut bills and put more of their funding back into classrooms. The scale matters too. The Great British Energy Solar Partnership is worth up to £255 million in total across schools, colleges, NHS sites and military sites. That suggests ministers now see roof space across the public estate as part of energy policy as well as estate management.
The real test, though, is whether the numbers hold up in everyday school life. At LIFT Feversham School in Yorkshire, the government says solar panels combined with other efficiency measures cut energy bills by around Ā£23,000 in the first year. Principal Naveed Idrees said the work also fed into teaching, community engagement and the schoolās approach to sustainability. Robert Schrimpff of Solar Options for Schools said the new pilot could make access easier after years of work between schools and the Department for Education. He said the model should lower electricity costs without passing long-term monitoring and maintenance costs back to schools, and could be stronger still where community ownership is involved. That is the wider promise here: decarbonisation that pays back and stays visible in daily school life.
