GBE-N Bronze award spotlights veterans for UK nuclear jobs

In a 26 June 2026 statement released for Armed Forces Day, Great British Energy – Nuclear said it had received the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Bronze Award. On the surface, that is a workplace recognition update. Read more closely, it is also a marker of where the UK’s clean energy transition is heading: towards a bigger search for people who can work safely in tightly regulated, high-pressure industries, with veterans, reservists and military families clearly in view. The scale is already becoming clear. GBE-N says the first SMR project is expected to support around 3,000 jobs at peak construction, while its Wylfa project page points to a further 5,000 direct, indirect and induced roles across the wider supply chain. Government’s advanced nuclear framework adds that Wylfa was confirmed in November 2025 as the site for the first GBE-N SMR project, with initial work beginning in 2026. The wider labour picture is just as urgent. Parliament’s Energy Security and Net Zero Committee says clean energy industries could grow from around 440,000 jobs in 2023 to 860,000 jobs across the UK by the end of the decade. The government’s Clean Energy Jobs Plan also identifies 31 priority occupations, including electricians, electrical engineers, engineering professionals, project managers and welders. Military experience will not map neatly onto every civilian role, but sectors such as nuclear do need people who understand procedure, maintenance, teamwork, risk management and delivery under scrutiny. Nuclear employers are also working against a sector-specific gap. The NDA Group’s 2026 strategy says the 2024 National Nuclear Strategic Plan for Skills aims to recruit 40,000 additional workers across civil and defence nuclear programmes. At the same time, the government’s Clean Energy Jobs Plan says the 2030 electricity system will be led by home-grown renewables, with nuclear providing reliable power alongside other flexible low-carbon technologies. The case for bringing veterans into nuclear is therefore not about setting one clean technology against another. There is also a clear fairness test here. Office for National Statistics data show 755,800 veterans were in employment in England and Wales at the 2021 Census. Yet the government’s new Veterans Strategy says 52.5% of veterans had at some point taken a job below the experience or skill level of their last armed forces role, even though 85.4% said they had transferable skills from service. It is making military qualifications easier to recognise, creating routes into engineering and project roles, supporting reservists at work and giving families confidence that clean energy careers can offer real progression over time. The strongest point in the original GBE-N statement was that support for the Armed Forces community should go beyond recruitment. That is the right test. A serious transition plan would track who joins, who stays, who advances and whether these roles genuinely use the skills people bring with them from service. The Veterans Strategy says government will work with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to promote new clean energy pathways for veterans and their families, while the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme already includes more than 8,000 award-holding businesses. If GBE-N turns Bronze recognition into measurable hiring and progression as its SMR programme grows, this small announcement could become something more useful: a model for making the clean energy transition fairer, faster and better staffed.
