Plug-in Solar Panels Legal in Great Britain From 27 August
From Thursday 27 August 2026, households across Great Britain can legally buy and use plug-in solar panels, creating a cheaper entry point into home renewables. Ministers say a typical household could cut annual electricity bills by up to £110, with a single kit supplying as much as 20% of average electricity use. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh described the move as a simple, affordable way to bring down bills quickly. The bigger story is access: plug-in solar brings small-scale clean power within reach of homes that have often been left out of the rooftop solar boom, including some flats, rented properties and households without the budget for a full installation.
Each kit can produce up to 800W at peak output. In good sunshine, the government says that is enough to run everyday essentials such as a fridge, television, Wi-Fi router, laptop, phone charger and an Xbox S at the same time. When the panels are producing, part of a home's demand is met directly rather than being drawn from the grid. That will not look the same in every property, though. Output depends on daylight, orientation, shading and how much electricity is used during sunny hours. Energy Saving Trust has stressed that savings will vary, but it sees plug-in solar as a meaningful step in giving households more control over energy use and costs.
The legal change follows independent safety testing covering the main electrical components, with officials saying compliant panels work safely with UK wiring. The government also says the British safety specification is tighter than Germany's, where plug-in solar is already common and around half a million new devices were added last year. That detail matters because public confidence will make or break the rollout. David Boyer of the Energy Networks Association said network operators will keep working with government, Ofgem and manufacturers so the registration process keeps pace as more microgeneration appears on the system.
Retailers including Currys, Amazon, Argos, Wickes, B&Q and Screwfix are among those backing the rollout, with British Gas also planning to bring the technology to customers. The appeal is clear: unlike conventional rooftop solar, these kits do not require specialist installation, which keeps upfront costs lower and makes small-scale generation far less daunting. There are still practical checks before anyone buys. Plug-in solar can be placed in outdoor spaces and on some balconies, but households may need permission from a landlord, building owner or freeholder, and some properties may also need planning permission or listed building consent. The government says councils, landlords and freeholders should consider requests on their individual merits. Energy Saving Trust has published a checklist, while the Energy Networks Association holds the list of accredited devices and manufacturers.
Ministers are also presenting plug-in solar as part of a wider push to ease winter bills. In July, the Prime Minister announced plans to cut VAT on energy bills, building on £150 taken off bills in last year's Budget and the expansion of the £150 Warm Home Discount to around six million households. That mix of short-term relief and longer-term efficiency matters. Plug-in solar will not solve Britain's bills crisis on its own, but it tackles a more stubborn problem in home decarbonisation: too many people want cleaner power yet cannot fit panels on a roof or fund a larger system. Wickes put that housing reality plainly, noting that the UK still has some of Europe's oldest and least energy efficient homes.
The timing also fits a market that is already moving quickly. Figures from MCS show almost 150,000 certified solar installations in the first six months of 2026, up 17% on the previous strongest start to a year in 2025. MCS said that pace worked out at one certified solar installation every 74 seconds. Battery storage is rising alongside it. MCS recorded 36,000 certified battery installations in the same period, almost double the level a year earlier. Against that backdrop, plug-in solar looks less like a niche gadget and more like the smallest rung on a broader household energy ladder, from first savings to fuller home resilience.
For households that can use them, the numbers are modest but real. Government estimates suggest plug-in systems could save up to £110 a year, while larger rooftop solar can already save homeowners up to £480 a year. The more demand a home can shift into sunny daytime hours, the more useful those savings become. The policy test now is straightforward: keep safety standards high, make consumer guidance easy to follow and avoid unnecessary barriers for renters and leaseholders. If that happens, plug-in solar could turn balconies, patios and small outdoor corners into practical sources of cheaper clean power this winter, not as a silver bullet, but as one more workable piece of Britain's home energy shift.
