UK Bluetongue Cases Rise as Midge Risk Grows
UK bluetongue cases are climbing again, and the latest Defra update on 24 July 2026 makes clear this is now a live summer biosecurity issue rather than a winter carry-over. Since 1 July, officials have confirmed 24 BTV-3 cases across the UK, with 21 in England and 3 in Wales, while Scotland and Northern Ireland remain without confirmed cases this season. Recent detections show how mixed that picture can be. The reason this matters beyond routine farm paperwork is the weather signal behind it. Defra says the midges that spread bluetongue became active again on 31 March 2026, and that recent warm weather has pushed cumulative temperatures high enough for the virus to develop inside those insects, making onward transmission possible. The current rise sits inside a longer pattern. Defra says England recorded 126 BTV-3 cases on 73 premises between November 2023 and March 2024, the first UK incursions in more than 15 years. That was followed by 163 cases in the 2024 to 2025 season and 348 cases in Great Britain in 2025 to 2026, before this summer's count began again on 1 July 2026.
